Use case

Create e-commerce product photos with AI

A catalogue needs more than one white-background shot: a clean studio image for the listing, a lifestyle scene for the ad, a close-up for the detail tab and a seasonal variant for the campaign. Shooting all of that is slow and expensive. With image-editing models you start from one real photo of the product and generate the rest, keeping the packaging, shape and label intact.

Why this approach works

  • Editing models treat your photo as the ground truth, so the product itself stays the same while background, light and props change around it.
  • Variants are cheap: one source photo can become ten scenes in a single sitting, which makes A/B testing listing images realistic for a small shop.
  • A consistent prompt template gives the whole catalogue the same look, something that is hard to get when products are photographed months apart.

Step-by-step workflow

  1. 1

    Shoot one clean source photo

Photograph the product on a plain surface with even light, straight on and sharp. Phone photos are fine. The source decides the ceiling: scratches, glare and a crooked label will be carried into every variant.

  2. 2

    Generate the studio hero

Ask an editing model for a seamless backdrop, soft shadow and neutral light. This is the listing image for marketplaces, so keep it plain and check that proportions and text on the pack are unchanged.

  3. 3

    Build lifestyle scenes

Place the product in settings your buyer recognises: a kitchen counter, a gym bag, a bedside table. Describe the surface, the light and two or three props, and say what must not change about the product.

  4. 4

    Add detail and scale shots

Generate a close-up of the texture or material and one shot with a hand holding the product for scale. Hands are the usual weak spot, so generate a few and keep the best.

  5. 5

    Make seasonal variants

Reuse your best scene prompt and swap only the season or occasion: winter light, a gift ribbon, a summer terrace. The product stays, the context changes, and the campaign is ready without a new shoot.

  6. 6

    Check before you publish

Zoom to 100 percent and compare each image with the real product: colour, logo, number of buttons or stitches. Marketplaces and consumer law expect the picture to represent what is shipped.

Example prompts

Studio hero on seamless backdrop · Nano Banana 2 Edit
Keep the attached product exactly as it is, same shape, colours and label text. Place it centred on a seamless warm-white backdrop with a soft contact shadow, diffused softbox light from the upper left, sharp focus, e-commerce catalogue style.
Lifestyle scene · Gemini 3 Pro Edit
Place the attached bottle on a light oak kitchen counter beside a linen towel and a small bowl of lemons. Morning window light from the right, shallow depth of field, label facing the camera and fully legible. Do not alter the bottle.
Seasonal gift variant · FLUX Kontext Dev
Keep the product unchanged. Put it on a dark green velvet surface with a thin gold ribbon and a few pine sprigs, warm evening light, festive but restrained, space on the left for text.

What a product launch set costs

A typical set for one product: a studio hero, four lifestyle scenes, two detail shots and a seasonal variant. Multiply by the size of your catalogue to plan a month.

Counts assume one generation per image. Packaging text is the most common reason to regenerate, so leave room for two or three retries per hero image. Price your own mix with the video cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI replace a product photographer?

For many catalogue needs, yes: backdrops, lifestyle scenes and seasonal variants can be generated from one real photo. You still need that source photo, and anything with complex reflections or precise engineering may need a real shoot.

How do I stop the model from changing my product?

Attach the real photo, say explicitly that the product, label and colours must stay unchanged, and describe only the new surroundings. Always compare the result with the original at full size.

Which image size works for marketplaces?

Most marketplaces want a square or near-square image of at least 1000 pixels on the long side with a plain background. Generate at the model’s native size, then crop in your editor.

Is it honest to show generated scenes in a listing?

Yes, as long as the product shown matches what the customer receives and you do not invent features, sizes or certifications. Check each marketplace’s policy on AI-generated imagery.
